Energy concept for sports hall and school building in Wiesbaden

The plan was to construct the building to passive house standard. A ventilation system is required to achieve hygienic air exchange. The open space next to the building is very suitable for the installation of an air/earth heat exchanger. In summer, this can use the coolness of the ground to precondition the ventilation system and, conversely, in winter, the warmth of the ground. The supply air is blown in via the seating in the classroom at the window area. The exhaust air is extracted above the rooms via exhaust air ducts located in the cupboard elements or in the suspended corridor ceilings. The hot water supply in the elementary school is decentralized. The hot water supply for the gymnasiums is provided by 4-5 solar collectors on the roof, which are connected to a buffer tank. Rainwater harvesting via a cistern is planned for the toilets in the school and the gymnasiums.
IPH Selzer Ingenieure is building an educational and information trail for the pupils, where they can see how the building and its technology “work”. In this way, even primary school pupils can learn about the environmentally friendly use of energy.

Brief portrait

As part of an architectural competition, IPH developed an energy concept for the new elementary school and gymnasium in Prüfening. The concept included a brine/water heat pump to cover the base load and a gas condensing boiler for the peak load. Another point of consideration in the energy concept was heat distribution in the building via concrete core activation. The reversible heat pumps can also be used to cool the ceilings in summer.
