In the town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt, a comprehensive concept was developed for a CO₂-free heat supply for municipal companies. The aim was to increase the proportion of green energy in district heating from the current 60% to 100% and to completely replace fossil fuels. A detailed plan was drawn up for both district heating networks, describing the switch to heat pumps that use energy from wastewater, river water and air. In addition, solar thermal energy was integrated as a reliable heat source, particularly to cover demand in the summer months.
In addition, other municipal facilities such as the Vitalpark, the housing cooperatives and the Kurparkklinik were examined in order to test their integration into the district heating networks or to develop independent sustainable solutions.
Other technologies such as photovoltaics, wind power, agri-PV and agrothermal energy were also included in the planning in order to further strengthen the energy concept and maximize the use of renewable energy sources.
The resulting overall concept brings all areas together in an integrated strategy and shows how a completely green district heating supply can be implemented technically and organizationally to ensure an almost 100% CO2-free supply for the city. It also contains cost and price scenarios, a timetable and an analysis of funding opportunities to ensure that implementation is economically viable.
